Discover Chrissy Teigen's genius method to safely consume deli meat during pregnancy: Is it a game-changer?
Supermodel and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen, a popular figure on social media, has encountered pregnancy complications with her third baby, which resulted in hospitalization. Despite being in the hospital, Teigen shared her hubby John Legend's homemade ham and cheese sandwich on social media. Teigen has admitted that she craves cold cuts during her pregnancy, including late-night Lunchables, which pose health risks to pregnant women. Deli meats must be avoided as they can cause Listeriosis, a bacterial infection caused by Listeria, and pregnant women are ten times more likely to experience this infection than the general population. Still, Teigen shared a hack with her fans on Instagram stories that microwaving the deli meat can kill the listeria without overcooking the meat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests Pregnant women should have hot dogs, lunch meats, cold cuts, and fermented or dry sausages heated until steaming hot. Dr. Steve Rad, an OBGYN and Medical Director of Los Angeles Fetal & Maternal Care Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Office Towers, noted that deli meats are forbidden for pregnant women due to their susceptibility to Listeriosis. Mothers who contract Listeriosis face complications such as miscarriage, poor fetal growth, preterm labor and birth, stillbirth, blood stream infections, diarrhea, and fevers. Hence, it is advised to be cautious when pregnant. Rad advises expectant mothers to avoid hot dogs, lunch meats, cold cuts, and other deli meats.
To appease your yearning for cold cuts, take note of the CDC's recommendations and ensure they reach a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees. Cook to the point of being “steaming hot” to extinguish possible bacteria.
According to the USDA, consume these heated meat products promptly and do not keep them at room temperature or refrigerate again. When using the microwave to warm them up, ascertain that the entire item has attained the necessary temperature," Rad elucidated.
Now, where did you put the meat thermometer?
