Uncovering the Secrets of the Long-Extinct with Paleontologist Paul Sereno
Nigersaurus, a peculiar plant-eating dinosaur with a slender and intricate skull and an exceptional 500 teeth adapted for browsing vegetation close to the ground, lived over 110 million years ago in the luscious terrain of Niger’s vast Sahara Desert. Its exceptional broader, straight-edged muzzle accented by replaceable teeth holds a place in history as one of the first dinosaur skulls reconstructed digitally from CT scans. Nigersaurus was accompanied by other predators such as the Suchomimus, herbivores including the Lurdusaurus and Ouranosaurus, and the giant crocodile Sarcosuchus.

As the Paul Sereno team roamed the dunes on their most recent excavation in 2000, they stumbled upon the bones of Nigersaurus alongside the remains of a new 30-foot-long carnivore and a colossal, armored-back crocodile known as Sarcosuchus. After recovering a skeleton of Nigersaurus, the team also discovered a hatchling’s upper jaw, a purple-colored sandstone area where several baby Nigersaurus’ jawbones lay scattered. Planning to find more evidence of the new meat-eating creature shortly, they pursued their goal of excavating all animal and plant fossils that had once thrived around 110 million years back.
