Islam is a complete way of life that incorporates not just the spiritual aspects that deal with nourishing the soul, like prayer, pilgrimage, and charity, but also mundane things like what we eat and drink.
Muslims place equal importance on spiritual well-being and physical fitness. The adage, "You are what you eat," is well-known to all of us. "The basic premise is that if you eat healthy, natural food, you will maintain a healthy body." However, if you consume foods that contain toxins, you may experience unintended side effects. Numerous health issues have been linked to eating pork. There are approximately 2 billion Muslims worldwide, for whom the prohibition on eating pork is not a personal preference but a religious mandate. Keeping that rule is a form of worship.
Who or what started the No-Pork Rule and Why?
A total of four different verses in the Quran explain why God forbids us to eat pig. The reason for this ban is given in one verse:
To paraphrase the Noble Quran (6:145), you could say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it, except for the flesh of a dead animal, the blood that has been spilled, or the flesh of swine, for indeed, it is impure."
As an unclean animal, the pig is a target for God's health precautions. As a scavenger, it will eat almost anything it finds. This creature consumes a wide variety of toxins through its diet, which includes maggots, decaying animals and vegetables, and even its own waste.
Unlike herbivorous mammals like cows and sheep, which chew their cud, this animal can digest a wide variety of foods quickly because it is an omnivore. Toxins and parasites are not filtered out and instead accumulate in the pig's fat. Pork contains high levels of parasites and viruses that can be transmitted to humans.
On the other hand, cattle and sheep have three digestive chambers before the stomach. This makes for a digestive system that needs anywhere from 12 hours up to 24 hours to break down food and eliminate toxins. Since poultry have an extra pouch before their stomach, digestion takes longer for them.
The sanity of limitations
God, who made us and all other creatures, is fully aware of their respective strengths and weaknesses. We give in and comply He sees and knows everything, and His wisdom is unfathomable. When putting limits on something, it's usually because of the potential danger it poses to our health. It's for our own good, even if we don't see how at first.
When it comes to His creation, God only wants the best. For our own good, God has given us limitations, and this is a blessing. As a result of his efforts, we can now partake of any good or pure food or drink without fear of repercussion.
Not only does Islam forbid eating pork, but many religions do as well. The Bible also makes reference to it. The holy books of these people make it abundantly clear that pork is forbidden. The Bible forbids pigs in several places, including Deuteronomy 14:18, Isaiah 66:17, and Leviticus 11:7-8.
A pig is considered unclean because it does not chew its cud, despite having a cloven hoof that is completely split. Neither their meat nor their carcasses are fit for human consumption; they are unclean. This is what the Lord commanded us to do (Leviticus 11:7-8)
Some people say that the ban on eating pork is a relic of a time when sanitation was worse and therefore only applicable to ancient cultures. The meat may not be completely cooked because it was cooked over open flames. Lack of access to refrigeration led to the meat spoiling rapidly. One of the leading vectors of Hepatitis E is pork liver. Several studies in Europe, where raw pork liver is commonly used to make sausages, found that as many as one in five of these products was contaminated with the virus (Szabo K et al Intl J of Food Microbiol 2015).
The trichinosis-inducing roundworm parasite Trichinella spiralis has a long history of association with eating pork. Muscle tissue from pork that has not been cooked thoroughly enough is the vector for the transmission of this parasite. The parasite can survive in the human intestines and spread to other parts of the body via the bloodstream, where it can cause a wide variety of symptoms and even death.
The consumption of pork has also been linked to an increased risk of developing multiple sclerosis. Countries where it is illegal to eat pork (e g Near and Middle East) found that MS was uncommon (Nanji A. A., Med. Hypotheses 1986)
Plenty of other foods are available that are neither banned nor linked to any serious health risks.
How Muslims Eat
You don't have to settle for a boring, tasteless diet just because pork is off limits. Meat from cattle, sheep, lamb, chicken, quail, and fish can all be eaten. Eating a diet rich in fresh produce, whole grains, nuts, and seeds is also recommended.
As Allah proclaims in the Holy Quran,
The grazing livestock He made for you provide shelter, food, and other benefits. Scripture (16:5)
What we eat and drink has profound implications. Islam stresses the importance of eating healthily and avoiding harmful substances. Having access to a wealth of data at our fingertips is a blessing in today's world. There was no way for Muslims to have known this information 1400 years ago, and yet they were shielded from every possible danger.
