Liquid poop is a common symptom of an infection or inflammation of your digestive tract. Passing liquid stool can interfere with your daily routine if you frequently have to run to the bathroom or you pass excessive amounts of gas. Runny watery poop or completely liquid stool can be accompanied with other symptoms like abdominal cramping, bloating, anal leakage, nausea, and anal itching. In extreme cases, loose bowel movements can happen unexpectedly or come out like explosive diarrhea.

Watery stools that are the result of a viral or bacterial infection usually last around a week. However, many natural remedies can help to soothe digestive upset and reduce the intensity of your symptoms. Some natural ways of treating liquid poop include consuming ginger, raw plain yogurt, probiotic supplements, and drinking chamomile tea.

Runny poop can also be a symptom of inflammatory bowel disorders or food intolerances. You may also find that you need to rush to the bathroom because of liquid diarrhea if you are taking antibiotics or are under a lot of stress. In any case, there are many ways to remedy the symptoms of passing liquid stool.

What is Liquid Poop?

Liquid poop is another name for diarrhea which is a loose or watery bowel movement. Doctors from the National Institutes of Health say that passing liquid, watery stool is classed as diarrhea if it occurs more than 3 times a day.1

Passing runny poop can be an acute medical condition that only lasts a few days. Or, watery diarrhea can become chronic when it lasts for longer than 4 weeks and your symptoms of loose poop can come and go.

Because passing watery stool means that your body is losing fluid, dehydration can be a complication of diarrhea. If you have bouts of poop that is watery, you should drink fluids containing electrolytes to prevent dehydration.

Symptoms of Passing Liquid Stool

Usually, pooping liquid stool is accompanied by other symptoms of digestive upset. This is because, gastrointestinal infections, irritation, or inflammation can cause muscles in the gut or abdomen to contract and cause pain.

Dr. John P. Cunha on eMedicineHealth says that passing liquid poop in a bowel movement can also have any of the following symptoms:2

Causes of Liquid Poop

There is actually a lot that the consistency and color of your stool can tell about your health. Let’s look in more detail at some of the many reasons why your poop is coming out like water. At the end of the article, you can find helpful home remedies to help treat stool that is loose and watery.

A common reason for passing liquid poop during an uncomfortable bowel movement is gastroenteritis. This inflammation of the intestinal lining can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. Gastroenteritis is sometimes referred to as stomach flu.

Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that the watery stool along with mild to severe abdominal cramping is a symptom of stomach flu. The symptoms of a stomach infection can last from one or two days up to 10 days.3 If the viral stomach infection is severe, you could start having completely liquid stool if you have no solid matter left in your stomach.

Depending on the severity of the infection, you may also have any of the following symptoms:

  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches

Doctors at the National Institutes of Health say that the best way to prevent gastroenteritis is to wash your hands frequently. It’s also important not to share eating utensils or share food or drink with infected persons.4

Food poisoning

Food poisoning can cause symptoms of gastroenteritis like liquid stool and abdominal cramping. Viruses, bacteria, and parasites can infect food and drink and cause a wide range of nasty digestive problems.

Dr. Mary Harding on says that the most common pathogens that result in watery bowel movements are salmonella, norovirus, rotavirus, or Campylobacter. The stomach bug causes abdominal cramping that is usually eased by passing watery stool. Other symptoms of food poisoning can include:5

  • Body chills and aches
  • Fatigue and a lack of energy
  • Dizziness
  • Passing small amounts of urine
  • A dry tongue

Traveler’s diarrhea. Dr. Laurence Knott on says that traveler’s diarrhea has the same causes as food poisoning. Coming down with the “runs” on vacation is common in countries in Southeast Asia, South and Central America, and many countries in Africa. The main symptom of traveler’s diarrhea is watery stools that may or may not contain blood.

Food allergies

An allergic reaction to certain foods can turn your poop like water and cause many different symptoms. Food allergies are more serious than food intolerances and shouldn’t be confused.

According to the journal Advances in Dermatology and Allergology, common food allergies that cause your poop turn to liquid are shellfish, peanut, nuts, eggs, or fish. This can cause persistent bouts of passing liquid stool and possibly frequent vomiting.7

Other symptoms of a food allergy include:

Some studies indicate that taking certain probiotic supplements can help protect against food allergies. At the end of the article, you will find how probiotics can also help reduce symptoms of loose poop.

Food intolerance

One reason why you could be pooping liquid is if you have a food intolerance. A food intolerance means that a person’s digestive system has difficulty digesting a certain food.

Researchers from Germany say that the main symptoms of food intolerance are liquid stool along with abdominal cramping and the need to get rid of excess gas. Some common foods that many people can’t digest properly are:8

  • Dairy products (lactose intolerance)
  • Fructose
  • Sorbitol (used as a sweetener)
  • gluten

Food intolerance can also cause the following symptoms:

The only way to treat a food intolerance and prevent pooping liquid diarrhea after eating is to eliminate the food/s causing digestive upset.

Other Causes of Liquid Diarrhea

Celiac disease

Another digestive problem that can mean you start pooping liquid stool is celiac disease. Celiac disease is listed as a separate cause of liquid diarrhea because it isn’t a food allergy or intolerance.

According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology, celiac disease is an autoimmune reaction to gluten that is found in foods such as barley, wheat, and rye. The symptoms of celiac disease include:9

  • Watery stools
  • Abdominal pain
  • Gas and bloating
  • Brain fog

To prevent symptoms of celiac disease, it’s important to avoid all food and drink containing gluten.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic digestive problem that triggers various uncomfortable digestive symptoms, including watery liquid stool.

According to Dr. Minesh Khatri, the type of IBS that mainly causes diarrhea is referred to as IBS-D. This results in frequent bouts of loose stool as well as abdominal cramping and gas. The reason for passing liquid stool with IBS is because food passes through your digestive system too quickly.10 Other symptoms of IBS include:11

To know how to treat its symptoms, please read my article on the best home treatments for IBS. There you can find out how peppermint oil capsules, aloe vera juice, and licorice can help to treat watery bowel movements.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Inflammatory bowel disease can be a reason for passing runny poop after a meal. Two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Chronic inflammation of your digestive tract can cause a number of unpleasant symptoms. Gastroenterologist Dr. William A. Rowe says that IBD often causes recurring diarrhea with loose stools and abdominal pain. Along with pooping liquid matter, other symptoms of IBD can include:

Stress can be one of the causes of passing watery stools and can also aggravate pre-existing digestive conditions.

The journal Neurobiology of Stress explains that the brain can influence the gut’s behavior when under stress. When a person is suffering emotional or psychological stress, anxiety, or depression, changes occur in the microbiota. This can result in digestive upset and increased episodes of loose stool diarrhea.12

According to the World Journal of Gastroenterology, stress can precede IBS flare-ups and increase the frequency of passing liquid poop.13

Runny poop is just one of the ways that stress affects your body. To help relieve stress and cope better with anxiety, please check out my natural stress-relieving remedies.

Side effect of certain medications

You may experience episodes of liquid poop if you are taking medication for heartburn or high blood pressure.

Dr. Jay W. Marks on MedicineNet says that some medicines that cause your poop to turn to liquid are:

  • Antacids
  • Nutritional supplements that contain magnesium
  • Antibiotics
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Chemotherapy

If you must take a course of antibiotics, you should take probiotic supplements to restore pH levels and fight pathological bacteria. This will reduce the frequency of loose poop caused by medication.

Other Causes of Watery Stool

There are also some less-common reasons why your poop comes out like watery stool.

Gastric bypass surgery. If you have undergone bariatric surgery, you might find that you have frequent liquid bowel movements. Researchers from the University of Rochester says that this is called dumping syndrome. The after-effects of gastric surgery can cause watery poop 30 minutes to an hour after eating. To prevent diarrhea after eating, the researchers recommend not drinking anything for 30 minutes after eating a meal.14

Bile acid malabsorption. Watery diarrhea can mean that your digestive system can’t reabsorb bile acids back into the bloodstream. Dr. Colin Tidy on says that bile acid malabsorption is common in IBS sufferers and usually causes liquid stool without blood. There are not usually any accompanying symptoms apart from frequent or continuous bouts of diarrhea.15

Parasites. Having liquid poop could mean that you have a parasite infection from consuming contaminated food or drink. Doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that some foodborne parasites can cause explosive diarrhea along with abdominal pain, weight loss, and muscle pain.16

Running long distances. People who run long distances of 10 miles and more often have what’s called runner’s diarrhea. Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that the reason for pooping watery stools after running could be due to pressure on the internal organs, decreased blood flow to the intestines, or pre-race anxiety.17

To prevent pooping watery diarrhea after a race, doctors recommend not eating anything at least 2 hours before a race and keeping yourself well-hydrated.

How to Treat Watery Stool and Stop Diarrhea

Passing liquid poop occasionally or having frequent episodes of watery bowels movements is never a pleasant experience. Thankfully, there are some effective home remedies for watery stool that should help to soothe digestive upset and its associated symptoms.

Ginger to soothe digestive upset

Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help to improve your digestion and stop passing runny poop.

For example, doctors from eMedicineHealth report on the medicinal use of ginger in treating gastrointestinal upset. Doctors say that ginger is commonly taken to treat symptoms of stomach upset like diarrhea. Consuming ginger has also proven to be effective in treating bloody diarrhea caused by bacterial infection.17

In fact, one study showed that taking ginger can help to reduce nausea and vomiting in up to 38% in people who had undergone surgery. Also, applying 5% ginger oil to a patients wrists reduced nausea in around 80% of patients.17

How to use ginger to stop passing liquid poop:

Chamomile tea

A soothing cup of chamomile tea can help to calm irritation and inflammation in your digestive tract that is causing runny poop.

A review published in the journal Electronic Physician reported that chamomile extracts have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antidiarrheal properties. One of the active ingredients in chamomile is bisabolol which is a powerful antimicrobial compound. Consuming chamomile can help to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, relieve gut inflammation, and help stop abdominal cramping.18

How to take chamomile tea to relieve symptoms of diarrhea:

  1. Put a chamomile tea bag or 1 tbsp. dried chamomile flowers in a cup of boiling water.
  2. Cover the cup and allow the chamomile to infuse for up to 10 minutes.
  3. Strain the remedy into a cup and drink to help calm your stomach upset and get rid of the symptoms of diarrhea quickly.
  4. Drink 3-4 times a day for gastrointestinal relief until your bouts of passing liquid poop stop.

Taking probiotics regularly can help prevent stool from becoming completely liquid and stop diarrhea caused by infections or antibiotics.

The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology published a study on the effectiveness of probiotics in boosting gut health. Researchers reported that probiotic supplements containing Lactobacillus GG and S. boulardii strains were the most effective in treating acute watery diarrhea. Probiotics were also helpful in reducing the symptoms of viral gastrointestinal infections caused by the rotavirus or bacterial infections caused by the C. difficile strain.19

Other Home Remedies for Liquid Stool

Other ways you can treat symptoms of digestive inflammation or gastro-related infections can include:

  • Changing to a bland diet while you have an upset digestive system
  • Consuming carrot soup
  • Using the BRAT diet (consisting of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast)
  • Taking peppermint oil capsules for irritation in the digestive tract

What Does It Mean When Your Poop Comes Out Like Water?

Some people can be worried if their poop is so watery that it feels like they are urinating out of their back passage. What does it mean if you have pure liquid diarrhea?

Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that viral gastrointestinal infections like gastroenteritis often cause watery diarrhea. Depending on the severity of your infection and how much liquid you are drinking, your poop may be just liquid and nothing else. As with most cases of diarrhea, if your symptoms last longer than a couple of days, you should see your doctor.3

Why Do I Have Diarrhea with Mucus?

All stool contains small amounts of mucus. If you have an infection of the intestines or intestinal irritation, you may find that you have liquid poop with a mucus-like substance.

According to Dr. Minesh Khatri on WebMD, liquid stools with mucus could be due to food poisoning, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammation of the rectum, or ulcerative colitis. If you notice a lot of rectal mucus with watery bowel movements, you should speak to your doctor.20

When to See a Doctor

Passing liquid poop during a bowel movement usually only lasts a couple of days. Thankfully, many home remedies can help to clear up your symptoms and soothe intestinal discomfort.

However, there are some circumstances when you should see a doctor for liquid diarrhea. According to Dr. Regina LaRocque from Harvard Medical School, you should see your doctor for watery diarrhea if you have the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhea is associated with vomiting and you can’t keep fluids down
  • You notice signs of bleeding from your anus along with diarrhea
  • You have signs of dehydration
  • Your diarrhea persists for longer than 7 days
  • Severe abdominal pain accompanies loose bowel movements

Shaving is something that most of us have to do on a regular basis and for most people is a necessary part of caring for their physical appearance. However, anyone that regularly shaves knows that the shaving process can leave the skin feeling irritated with breakouts of rashes, bumps, spots, and sometimes ingrown hairs. Some of us may also suffer from razor bumps and razor burns and in fact these two conditions can affect women as well as men. But, if you suffer from razor bumps or razor burns, there is much you can do to help reduce skin irritation and the appearance of razor bumps naturally. This article examines the many natural remedies that you can use to get rid of razor bumps and razor burns.

First of all, it’s important to know the difference between razor bumps and razor burns.

What Are Razor Bumps and Razor Burns?

Very often, the terms razor bumps and razor burns are used interchangeably. However, there is a big difference between razor bumps and razor burns.

Razor bumps occur when the hair that re-grows after shaving stays under the skin by either growing into the skin or by staying in the hair follicle. The medical term for razor bumps is pseudofolliculitis barbae.

This can lead to inflammation which can cause spots and pimples to develop and even lead to abscesses. Razor bumps are caused by regular shaving and, while they affect mainly the face, they can also affect any area that is shaved such as the legs, head, the bikini line, and the pubic area. Because they form by the hair growing back into the skin, they tend to affect more people with short, curly hair.

On the other hand, razor burns refer just to the skin irritation that sometimes occurs after shaving. It is usually caused by shaving with a blunt blade or not having the skin properly moist and lubricated beforehand. Areas of the body like the armpits, bikini zone, and face can be quite sensitive, and because coarser hairs grow there, people tend to have more razor burns in those areas.

How to Prevent Razor Bumps

Because of the way that razor bumps develop, it can be difficult to completely get rid of them. The only way to completely avoid razor bumps is to let the hair grow, however, for many people that isn’t an option.

There are some preventative measures that you can take to prevent razor bumps from developing.

The best way to reduce razor bumps is to shave carefully and make sure that the hairs are softened as much as possible before shaving. The American Family Physician Journal, which studied the effects of razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) on black men, recommends the following to avoid razor bumps:1

  • Never try to achieve a close shave, so, always shave in the direction of hair growth.
  • Use a single blade razor
  • Don’t pull the skin while shaving
  • Gently brush the area to be shaved to loosen embedded hairs and apply a warm compress

Electric razors can have better results than a blade. You can also try using a razor which has blade wrapped in a wire because that can avoid shaving too close to the skin. If possible, try to shave every other day.

After shaving, it is important to care properly for the skin. To know how to naturally care for your skin after shaving, please read on because the advice on how to get rid of razor burns will help you take care of your skin naturally.

How to Get Rid of Razor Bumps Naturally

Although it is quite difficult to completely avoid razor bumps if you are prone to them, there are some natural ways that you can reduce the frequency of them, or prevent them altogether.

Warm Compress

Applying a warm compress is one of the best and easiest ways to get rid of razor bumps naturally, as the heat from the compress helps to soften the skin and may help draw the ingrown hair closer to the surface.

Here is what you should do:

  1. Soak a washcloth with hot water and press on the razor bump. To keep the cloth hot, soak it in hot water every so often and then reapply.
  2. Leave the compress for up to 10 minutes twice a day. When you can see the hair under the skin, you can carefully remove it with a sterile needle and tweezers.
  3. Don’t squeeze hard on the razor bump or start picking or digging to get the ingrown hair out. Doing so could spread infection deeper into the skin and damage it, leaving you with a scar. So if you see that the ingrown hair hasn’t appeared after using the warm compress, you should try one of the remedies below to try to get rid of the ingrown hair by other methods.

Natural Exfoliators

Sugar Scrub

Research published in the dermatology journal Cutis showed that a topical application of glycolic acid can help reduce and prevent razor bumps by 60%.2 Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane and sugar beets as well as milk.

You can make your own natural glycolic acid face mask to help reduce razor bumps on face as well as other skin areas. For this, mix 2 tbsp. raw organic sugar with 2 tbsp. raw honey with the juice of half a lemon and mix well. Make sure that the sugar is as fine as possible. Apply to the face and neck, avoiding the eyes and leave for 5-10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Repeat this once or twice a week to reduce the chance of forming a razor bumps.

Alternatively, you can combine 2 tbsp. sugar with 1 to 2 tbsp. plain yogurt or extra virgin olive oil and add 1 or 2 drops of lavender essential oil. Apply the same way as the sugar and honey face mask. For extra soothing, use a cotton pad dipped in some chamomile tea (which has many other health benefits) to remove the face mask.

Baking Soda and Coconut Oil

You can make your own natural scrub by mixing together baking soda and virgin coconut oil. The grainy texture of baking soda makes it a great natural ingredient to remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and help get rid of ingrown hairs. When mixed with coconut oil it makes a natural anti-inflammatory scrub that helps to reduce redness, swelling, and preventing bacterial infection.

Here is how to make baking soda scrub to get rid of razor bumps:

  1. Mix together 2 tbsp. virgin coconut oil and 1 tbsp. baking soda to make a thick paste (if you have a sensitive skin you can increase the amount of the coconut oil or reduce the amount of baking soda).
  2. Gently massage the paste onto the razor bump and leave for a few minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Repeat the process once or twice a week to reduce the occurrence of razor bumps.

Sea Salt Scrub

Sea salt is a natural detoxifier that contains valuable minerals naturally found in the sea that are beneficial for our skin. The texture of sea salt and the fact that it has antiseptic and cleansing properties makes it a good option to exfoliate the skin to reduce the appearance of razor bumps.

Use sea salt that doesn’t have rough, sharp edges. The texture of the sea salt should be fine and gentle to the touch, as you don’t want it to scratch your skin but gently exfoliating the dead skin cells.

To make a sea salt facial scrub for razor bump here is what you should do:

  1. Mix 1 tbsp. sea salt with enough water to create a thick paste. You can add to the mixture a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil.
  2. Dampen your face and gently massage the mixture into your skin (avoid any wounded or scratched areas). Leave for a few minutes and rinse with warm water.
  3. Repeat the process once or twice a week.

How to Prevent Razor Burns

The best way to prevent razor burns is to avoid the skin getting irritated in the first place. Here are the best tips on how to prevent razor burns from happening:

It’s important to moisten the skin beforehand. This will make shaving easier and reduce the chance of razor burns. You can do this by putting a warm, wet face cloth on the area to be shaved.

The next step is to lubricate the skin properly. Remember that many shaving gels and foams contain ingredients which irritate your skin. You can use a small amount of coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil and gently massage into the skin area to be shaved to prevent razor burns as well as ingrown hair.

When shaving, it is important to always use a sharp razor and never apply pressure on the skin – this is is extremely important if you are interested in how to get rid of razor bumps. It is also important to always shave in the direction that the hair grows. Even though you will not get as close a shave as going against hair growth, you will avoid irritating the skin and having ingrown hairs which can cause razor bumps.

Always use gentle, slow strokes when shaving and try to avoid going over an area more than once. After shaving, rinse with warm water.

After shave treatment

When you have finished shaving, it is very important to use natural remedies to care properly for your skin. That way you can prevent razor burns from developing or if you have razor burns, then you can treat them naturally. How can you do this? Here are my top natural remedies for preventing and getting rid of razor burns. You can also use these remedies for preventing and possibly getting rid of razor bumps.

How to Get Rid of Razor Burns Naturally

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is one of the best natural ways to treat and soothe damaged skin. Aloe vera contains many anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.3 Many dermatologists recommend using hydrocortisone creams to reduce razor burns, but studies have shown that aloe vera is just as effective as 1% hydrocortisone cream.4

To use, squeeze some of the gel from an aloe vera leaf and apply to the shaved area. If you buy aloe vera gel from health store, read the product label to make sure it contains the highest amount of aloe vera with the least amount of additives. You can also use aloe vera for treating rashes, skin inflammation, and infections after waxing hair removal. To find more information on how to use aloe vera for your skin, please read my article on aloe vera for great and healthy skin.

Aloe Vera and Coconut Oil

By mixing aloe vera together with coconut oil you can make an amazing natural treatment to treat razor burns and razor bumps. Coconut oil also contains powerful properties which can help soothe skin infections.5

To make an aloe vera and coconut oil healing lotion for razor burns please see instructions in my article about the health benefits of aloe vera and coconut oil. This healing lotion can be applied to the skin just after shaving.

Honey has been used for centuries to help treat wounds and repair damaged skin. It is one of the most natural foods available and it is full of healing properties, including powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial agents.5 By applying some honey directly to the affected area you reduce the risk of infection and also help moisturize the skin.

I have already written on the health benefits of Manuka honey, which is one of the best types of honey to use for killing infections. You can apply a little honey directly onto the shaved area, allow to dry, and then rinse off with water.

For more ideas, read my article about the top 10 honey face masks for all skin types.

Tea tree oil or lavender oil for Razor Burns

Tea tree essential oil is very versatile and has many uses. This oil is a natural astringent which, when applied to the skin, has antiseptic properties and reduces the risk of irritation. It is also antibacterial which will reduce inflammation on the skin. Tea tree oil could cause the skin to become more irritated if applied directly, therefore you need to dilute it in a carrier oil like jojoba oil or coconut oil.

To use tea tree oil, mix 3-5 drops of tea tree oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil and apply to the affected area. Leave for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse with water.

Another great and versatile essential oil you can use is lavender essential oil which is also antibacterial and helps to soothe irritated skin. Use it the same way as you use tea tree oil.

If you are interested to learn more about essential oils you can find useful information in my e-book Magical Aromatherapy.

Witch hazel for Razor Burns

To successfully treat razor burns you can also use witch hazel which has many uses and benefits for skincare. In fact, witch hazel is an ingredient in many skin treatments and lotions to reduce skin irritation. However, you don’t have to buy expensive lotions because witch hazel is a great natural way to soothe and treat razor burns which you can also use to get rid of razor bumps.

Witch hazel has anti bacterial properties, as well as anti-inflammatory properties.7

To use witch hazel for razor burns, put some witch hazel on a cotton pad, and then apply directly to the affected area.

Turmeric face mask

Most people usually only think of turmeric for its use in cooking, however, it also contains properties which are antioxidant and reduce inflammation. Turmeric contains curcumin, which scientists have discovered is a powerful anti-inflammatory.8

I have a wonderful recipe for making a turmeric face mask which can help to reduce redness and inflammation on the skin. All you need is 1 tsp of turmeric, 1 tsp of raw honey, and 1 tsp of milk or natural yogurt. You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil if you want.

Mix together and apply to the affected area for 20 minutes before rinsing off with water. Please remember that turmeric will stain fabric, so make sure that the paste is thick enough so that it doesn’t drip.

Diluted Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

One of the many uses of apple cider vinegar is its use as a natural antiseptic on the skin. It is very easy to make an effective and natural aftershave treatment using apple cider vinegar.

All you have to do is mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar (don’t use undiluted apple cider vinegar).

Dip a cotton pad in the liquid and apply to the affected area.

When you use apple cider vinegar for the first time, it is a good idea to rinse it off with water after 5 minutes. This is so your skin isn’t too exposed to apple cider vinegar on your first time.

If you don’t get a reaction, then the next time you use it, you can leave it for a longer period.

You can also add some witch hazel or aloe vera gel to the liquid.

If you are looking for more ideas on how to use apple cider vinegar as a face wash, then please read my article on why you should wash your face with apple cider vinegar.

Baking soda for Razor Burns

Baking soda can be used in many ways on the skin and one excellent way to reduce redness and inflammation is to mix some baking soda with coconut oil. Baking soda cleanses your skin and the coconut oil provides anti-inflammatory properties as well as moisturizing your skin.

To make a mask to help treat razor burns, mix 2 parts of coconut oil to one part baking soda if you have sensitive skin. Or if you have normal skin, then equal parts of coconut oil and baking soda. Apply to your skin after shaving, leave for few minutes and then wash it off with water. I have more recipes in my article on how to use baking soda for gorgeous face and skin.

Natural butters (Shea, cocoa) for Razor Burns

Natural butters can also do wonders for your skin and help to reduce skin irritation. Most people are afraid of putting butters on their skin because they think that it will make their skin oilier and cause spots. However, natural butters like Shea butter and cocoa butter contain essential nutrients to soothe your skin without clogging the pores.

For example, Shea butter contains a large amount of anti-inflammatory compounds9 and cocoa butter is an excellent moisturizer. If fact, because of the high fat content, you can also use some Shea butter or cocoa butter as a pre-shave treatment.

To get the benefits of Shea butter and cocoa butter after shaving, just gently massage some directly into the affected area.

How to Get Rid of Corns and Calluses: The Best Natural Treatments

27-09-2016 · Baking Soda Foot Bath. Baking soda can provide a good treatment for softening the rough skin covering calluses and corns. You can also use baking soda to exfoliate your …

Calluses and corns are patches of rough thickened skin that form on your hands and feet over time due to pressure and friction. Corns are similar to calluses but differ in that they have an inner core that is either soft or hard. Corns typically have a round shape, whereas calluses (also called callosities) lack a defined outline.

While soft corns form between your toes, hard corns form on the tops of them. Corns typically form in non-weight bearing parts of your feet and in areas with less cushioning. Home remedies such as baking soda, coconut oil and pumice stone can help you get rid of corns and calluses.

What Are the Symptoms of Corns and Calluses?

You can feel corns and calluses as hard areas of skin which appear different from the surrounding skin. They may be less sensitive to touch because of the thickened skin layer called the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin). While calluses don’t typically cause pain, corns may be painful.1 Neither are contagious.

What Causes Corns and Calluses?

Several things cause corns and calluses, but it often boils down to pressure and a process referred to as hyperkeratosis (abnormal thickening of the outer layer of the skin). Friction from ill-fitting shoes, socks, or stockings can make parts of your body vulnerable to callus formation.

Other factors that can cause calluses include pressure from high-heeled shoes, not wearing gloves and changes in your feet as you age.2 As you get older, your feet become wider and the cushioning within them thins.

Calluses are your body’s way of protecting your skin from damage. If you regularly walk on hard surfaces, you may also develop corns and calluses. That also includes high impact exercises.3 You may also be at risk if you have other foot conditions such as bunions or hammer toe.4, 5 These conditions can cause your toes to rub up against your shoes in an unnatural manner and create a friction spot.

Calluses and corns form as a way to protect yourself from frequent pressure and friction. Friction causes the outer layer of your skin to die causing dead skin which covers the corn. Guitar players, for example, get calluses on their fingertips as a result of pressure from guitar strings.

Let’s look at the top natural ways to get rid of calluses and corns.

Home Remedies for Corns and Calluses

Foot Soak in Epsom Salt Bath

Soaking your feet in an Epsom salt solution is an effective home remedy for softening corns and calluses. This makes it easier to remove the thickened skin while improving circulation to the affected area.

Soak your feet in a solution of warm water and ½ cup of Epsom Salt for 10 – 15 minutes to soften the dead hardened skin. When done, make sure to dry your feet and then exfoliate the thick skin of your feet with a pumice stone until the hard spots are gone. Simply rub the pumice stone over the corn or callus to remove the outer layer of dead skin.7

To keep your skin soft and to prevent corns and calluses from forming, moisturize your feet with coconut oil or jojoba oil or any other natural oil after exfoliating them.

Be careful when using the pumice stone and make sure not to irritate your skin. Doing so can make your skin vulnerable to skin infections.8 In addition, you should not use an Epsom salt foot bath if you have open sores on your feet.

Removal with Epsom Salt Rub

Epsom salt is a natural scrub that can help you to get rid of dead, dry skin. This in turn helps repair callused feet and get rid of corns as well.

Mix a 2:1 ratio of neutral oil such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil and Epsom salt. Rub the remedy gently on your hard skin to remove corns and calluses on your feet and toes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Rub moisturizing cream, lotion or natural oil on your feet to soften the skin.

You can also use sea salt scrub instead of Epsom salt to treat corns and calluses. Make sure to read my article on how to use sea salt scrub for gorgeous skin.

Foot Pads

Using foot pads is an effective way for prevention and treatment of corns and calluses. Foot pads relieve pressure on friction spots which can help to prevent the formation of corns and calluses and help to heal them faster. Foot padding can also help with relieving the pain of sore corns and can speed their healing process.

You can use moleskin padding or foot pads on pressure points or between your toes when wearing shoes. Without the pressure, your corns and calluses will fade away over time. You can also use moleskin or foot pads with new shoes on pressure points to prevent calluses.6 While foot pads are effective for getting rid of calluses, you need to be aware that callus removal takes time.9 Your patience will pay off in the end.

Coconut Oil for Rough Skin

A foot massage using coconut oil will improve blood circulation to the feet and it will also moisturize them and soften the hard skin which can help to prevent callus and corn formation. Messaging your skin with coconut oil can also prevent cracked skin which can result from calluses and infections.8

A study published in the journal, Dermatitis, found that coconut oil is an effective and safe moisturizer for treating scaly dry skin.10 As an added bonus, virgin coconut oil also has antiseptic properties.

To treat corns and calluses with coconut oil, warm about a teaspoon of coconut oil in your hands and massage your feet gently. Focus on the hardened areas of dead skin buildup to get rid of corns and calluses. Afterward, put on a pair of socks and let the oil work its magic overnight. Repeat this daily until your calluses and corns have completely healed.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a common callus treatment as well as a remedy for warts that works by reducing the thickness of calluses.11 It dissolves the dead skin layer of both corns and calluses.

Salicylic acid is derived from a chemical found in willow tree bark called salicin. It has a long history of folklore use for pain and wounds due in part to its anti-inflammatory properties. You probably know one of its derivatives well, namely, aspirin.

Apply salicylic acid to the hard skin as per your skincare product directions. Once your callus or corn has softened, you can remove the dead skin.

Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)

Sansevieria trifasciata, more commonly known as mother in-law’s tongue is as an effective natural treatment for getting rid of corns and calluses.12

A study published in the Global Journal of Health Science found that a 5 to 20 percent strength ointment containing Sansevieria trifasciata extract treated corns within 25 days. The researchers found that a 20 percent solution improved corns within 10 days.

Apple Cider Vinegar Foot Bath

Apple cider vinegar offers many health benefits and can reduce the rough thickened skin of calluses. It is also effective for softening skin to reduce their appearance. Its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties provide additional protection against infection.

Add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to a warm water foot bath and soak your feet for 10 minutes. As with the other foot baths mentioned, dry your feet thoroughly. Exfoliate the affected area with a pumice stone. To keep the skin area moisturized, apply some olive oil or coconut oil. Repeat once daily until your callus is gone.

Baking Soda Foot Bath

Baking soda can provide a good treatment for softening the rough skin covering calluses and corns. You can also use baking soda to exfoliate your skin to remove dead cells.

Add three tablespoons of baking soda to warm water and soak your feet for 10 – 15 minutes. You can then gently remove any dead skin using a pumice stone or foot file.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a great home remedy for treating corns and calluses. Like apple cider vinegar, the acidity of lemon juice gives it antimicrobial properties that can also soften your skin and prevent cracked heels.

You can apply lemon juice straight to the corn or calluses and allow it to air dry. You can also mix it with warm water for a pleasant-smelling foot bath. Soak your feet for 15 minutes to soften your skin.

Corns and Calluses – Note to Diabetics

While these are effective treatments for calluses and corns, you should consult your doctor before using any of them if you are diabetic or have a blood circulation condition. A common complication of diabetes is neuropathy or reduced sensation in your feet and hands. Because of this, you have a greater risk of developing foot ulcers that can lead to infections.13 Calluses are a risk factor for developing foot ulcers.

Tips for Preventing Corns and Calluses

In addition to remedies for corns and calluses, there are several self-care steps you can take to prevent them from developing by focusing on what is causing them in the first place.

Make sure you are wearing proper footwear to prevent corns and calluses. They should fit your feet well, with plenty of room for your toes. This will prevent your toes from rubbing on the inside of your shoes. You may also want to consider alternating the shoes you wear on different days.6

Swollen feet can also pose a risk for developing corns and calluses. When your feet swell, there is less room for them to move in your shoes. This can lead to parts of your feet rubbing against the insides of your shoes. Simple things such as elevating your feet or taking frequent breaks from your desk can improve circulation and keep your feet from swelling and creating pressure spots.

Your feet aren’t the only parts of your body susceptible to calluses. You should always wear gloves when gardening or doing yard work to prevent calluses from forming on your hands or knuckles, explains WebMD.6, 15 Pressure and friction can cause dead skin to build up just like it does on your feet.

Corns and Calluses – When to See Your Doctor

If you find that self-care treatments for corns and calluses are not providing relief, you may want to see your doctor. Other red flags signaling a doctor visit include pain from corns and calluses or if large areas of your body are affected. And of course, if you are diabetic or suffer from neuropathy or circulatory issues, you should always talk to your doctor first before trying self-care treatments.

Many remedies exist for corns and calluses. Simple measures such as properly fitting shoes and regular moisturizing can prevent hardened skin from developing and help you get rid of corns and calluses. The National Health Service explains that the best cure for corns, calluses, and callosities may simply be sensible shoes.16

RDW Blood Test: What It Means and What It Tells About Your Health

21-09-2017 · The normal range for measuring the differences in the size of red blood cells (erythrocyte) is between 11.8% and 14.6%. RDW level greater than 14.5% means that there is a large degree of variation in red blood cell size. Elevated red blood cell distribution width could mean that a person is anemic and is at risk of other health conditions.

Red cell distribution width (RDW for short) is a blood test used to measure the difference in size and volume of your red blood cells. Doctors use the RDW blood test as part of a complete blood test to help diagnose certain conditions that can affect your health. A blood test to measure variations in blood cell size can help diagnose causes of anemia, heart disease, diabetes, and liver disease.

The normal range for measuring the differences in the size of red blood cells (erythrocyte) is between 11.8% and 14.6%. RDW level greater than 14.5% means that there is a large degree of variation in red blood cell size. Elevated red blood cell distribution width could mean that a person is anemic and is at risk of other health conditions.

In this article, you will learn about the RDW blood test and what it means for your health. Using results from checking RDW level can help in the early diagnosis and successful treatment of certain health issues.

What is Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) Blood Test?

RDW lab test is usually part of a complete blood count (CBC) and is used in conjunction with the MCV test results (or, red blood cell mean corpuscular volume) to tell about your health. Usually, a doctor will take the blood test if there are concerns that you have anemia.

According to Dr. Choladda Vejabhuti Curry on Medscape, the RDW results themselves won’t confirm or rule out any type of anemia. Doctors will also take into account other indices on the complete blood test results like MCV and MCHC levels (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration).1

What are Low, Normal, and High RDW Levels?

According to doctors from the Mayo Clinic, the RDW reference range is 11.8% to 15.6%.2 However, some other clinics give the normal reference range for RDW between 11.6% and 14.6%. But, reference ranges may depend on the laboratory performing the test.3

The normal red blood cell distribution width in children will be slightly different. The RDW test results for children should be between 12% and 14% depending on their age.2

What RDW Blood Test Can Tell About Your Health

High and normal RDW levels in a blood test can help to tell a lot about your health. Taking RDW levels and comparing them with other red blood cell indices can allow doctors to check for anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, low levels of iron, and other blood disorders.

According to Medscape, the RDW results from a blood test can help determine the cause of the anemia and, therefore, how to treat it. This is what RDW blood test results along with MCV results can tell about your health:4

Normal RDW and normal MCV. Normal levels of both the RDW and MCV parameters could mean that you have anemia due to chronic blood loss or because of a chronic disease.

Normal RDW and low MCV. A low mean corpuscular volume with normal RDW can indicate that anemia is caused by a chronic disease or the inherited blood disorder thalassemia.

Normal RDW and high MCV. If your RDW levels are normal but MCV is too high, then this could mean that you have liver problems or your blood has been affected by alcohol, antivirals, or chemotherapy treatment. If you have a low lymphocyte count (lymphocyte is a type of white blood cell) you may have aplastic anemia.

Elevated RDW and normal MCV. RDW blood tests that show high levels but normal MCV can mean that iron, vitamin B12, or folate levels are too low. RDW that is too high with normal MCV could also be a sign of chronic liver disease.

Elevated RDW and low MCV. High RDW levels can mean that you have an iron deficiency if your MCV readings are lower than normal.

Elevated RDW and high MCV. If both your MCV levels and RDW levels are too high, then this could be caused by vitamin B12 or folate deficiencies, anemia, or chronic liver disease.

What Low, Normal, or High RDW Levels Can Mean

Let’s look in a bit more detail at the different health conditions that doctors can diagnose from your RDW blood test results.

Very often anemia is the cause of abnormalities with your RDW results. If the distribution width of your red blood cells is too low or too high, this can indicate that you have anemia.

For example, the Journal of the Indian Medical Association reported that high RDW is associated with microcytic hypochromic anemia.5 Also, the Mymensingh Medical Journal reported that taking into account RDW and other complete red blood cell count indices can help to determine iron deficiency anemia in people who are at risk of anemia, for example, pregnant women.6

If you have an iron deficiency anemia, you may also have chest pains, pale skin, cold hands and feet, poor appetite and inflammation of your tongue. You may also have low MCH levels, and low Hematocrit levels if you suffer from iron deficiency anemia.

The best way to increase your body’s iron levels is through diet. Some great sources of iron are beef, seafood, and chicken as well as kale, cooked beans, and pumpkin or sesame seeds. You can find more information about iron deficiency in my article about top signs of iron deficiency and how to increase iron levels in your blood.

Some of these natural sources of iron can also help deal with a vitamin B12 deficiency naturally which can also cause anemia. The easiest way to prevent vitamin B12 deficiency is by consuming different meats, seafood, milk and eggs as well as nutritional yeast and vitamin B12 fortified products, such as B12 fortified almond milk and cereals, and some breads.

Heart disease

Doctors can use results from RDW blood test to see if you are at more risk of developing heart disease. Erythrocyte (red blood cell) distribution width that is above normal levels could mean that there is a greater chance of suffering a heart attack, stroke, or peripheral artery disease.

According to the Journal of Thoracic Diseases, elevated RDW is a common factor in patients who suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease. Checking RDW as part of a CBC blood test can also help indicate if a person is at risk of recurring heart problems or the chances of recovering successfully from a stroke or heart attack.7

You shouldn’t wait until you get a blood test done to know if you are at risk for a stroke or heart attack. Please read my article on the 5 easy ways to greatly reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. You should also know the early warning signs of a heart attack and stroke, as they can help to save life.

High blood pressure

RDW levels can also tell a lot about your cardiovascular system and your risk of high blood pressure (hypertension). Although doctors can easily check your blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer, studies have shown that there is a link between RDW and hypertension.

The journal Experimental & Clinical Cardiology reported on the connection between RDW and high blood pressure. As well as high blood pressure putting a person at an increased risk of stroke, high RDW levels can also indicate other cardiac problems.8

One way to help reduce high blood pressure naturally is by making positive lifestyle changes. These can include eating a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, exercising regularly, as well as taking other natural supplements mentioned in my article on how to reduce high blood pressure naturally.

Doctors may check red cell distribution width to check for diabetes. Diabetes is caused by the body not producing enough or not responding properly to insulin. Diabetes can cause spikes in blood sugar levels, increased urination, and other serious complications. You can also get familiar with these early warning signs of diabetes you shouldn’t ignore.

Researchers have also found that RDW in diabetic patients is often increased. A study from 2015 found that RDW is significantly higher in people with diabetes. The study found that this was also connected with hypertension, and that regulating hypertension helped to reduce RDW.9

Some people with diabetes are able to manage diabetes symptoms with diet. However, other diabetics need regular insulin shots and should be under regular supervision by their doctor.

Autoimmune conditions

Differences in red cell distribution width can also be connected with certain autoimmune conditions. According to the journal Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation, RDW is an inflammatory marker that can help to diagnose anemia and autoimmune disorders. Researchers found that people with lupus had increased RDW whether they had anemia or not.10

Liver or Kidney Disease

If your liver or kidneys are not working properly, then this can show up in an RDW blood test. Your kidneys and liver play important roles in filtering out toxins from your blood. However, if they become damaged by disease, then RDW may increase and lead to other complications.

According to Medical Consultant Dr. Clifton Titcomb, RDW and MCV blood test can help in establishing liver disease. Dr. Titcomb said that normal RDW and low, normal, or high MCV could be a marker that there are problems with your liver.11

Also, a study from Scandinavia found that blood tests from people with impaired kidney function show increased RDW and can also be associated with cardiovascular disease.12

It is important to take care of the health of your kidneys and liver. Therefore, it’s important to know the first signs of kidney disease and how to protect them. Also, reducing alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and maintaining healthy body weight are all ways to help prevent damaging your liver.

It is common for pregnant women to suffer from anemia and have increased RDW level in their blood tests. A study in the International Journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics reported that changes in RDW happen throughout pregnancy. Doctors will address any iron and vitamin deficiencies to help keep mother and baby healthy. However, it was also found that in the few weeks before labor, RDW increase dramatically in preparation for giving birth.13

Lung disease

In some cases, elevated RDW in a blood test can help doctors treat patients with lung disease better. Dr. Clifton Titcomb says that checking CBC for red cell distribution width can be a marker to determine outcomes in people with pulmonary conditions.11

You can find more information in my article about early signs of lung disease and how to strengthen your lungs.

Some types of cancer cause a great variation in size and volume distribution of red blood cells and doctors can use this as one of the markers to diagnose some cancers. According to the journal Haematologica, RDW is higher in some people with cancer and can help determine the seriousness of the disease.12 Also, doctors can use RDW to help screen for breast cancer and determine the best course of treatment.13

However, you should remember that RDW is not in itself a determining factor in the presence of cancer. In most cases, RDW is an indicator of anemia and needs to be taken in context with other results from blood tests and diagnostic procedures.

Other Related Blood Tests

Guanabana Has Anti-Cancer Effects

Scientists have carried out a lot of guanabana cancer research to find out its potential as a cancer cure. The potential to use graviola extracts as a cancer treatment is to do with the presence of acetogenins.

Before promoting guanabana or graviola as a miracle cure for cancer, it’s important to remember that much of the research was carried out in vitro. This means the cancer treatment potential of guanabana was only seen in “test-tube” experiments. However, as you will see, scientific studies show the possibility that guanabana could be used to treat cancer in the future.

Researchers in India reported in 2014 that guanabana extracts from the fruit seeds, leaves, stems, and bark produce annonaceous acetogenins. They described these compounds as having real potential for cancer therapies. (6)

For example, clinical research on extracts of graviola leaves in 2014 found that the extracts seem to just target cancer cells. In an in vitro experiment, graviola extracts had a cytotoxic effect (meaning it destroys living cells) on certain tumor cells but did not affect healthy cells. (7)

Guanabana may treat breast cancer

Research from 2016 showed that extracts from the graviola fruit have promising results in treating breast cancer. The extract samples had an anticancer effect on breast cancer cells in mice and prevented the spread of the disease. The researchers concluded that the soursop sample has a potentially effective therapeutic effect on treating cancer. (8)

The journal Advances in Breast Cancer Research in 2014 reported on one woman who underwent chemotherapy to treat breast cancer. Can Guanabana Kill Cancer?

There is much controversy if guanabana (soursop or graviola) can cure cancer. Many studies published in reputable medical databases like PubMed show that guanabana extracts can reduce the size of tumors and kill off cancerous cells.

It is important to remember that there are very few significant clinical trials on using guanabana to cure cancer in humans. Most of the research into the therapeutic use of guanabana for cancer has been carried out in laboratory conditions using microscopic samples or on rodents.

However, many studies showed the potential effectiveness of using guanabana extracts to treat cancer in humans in the future. So, at present, it can’t be said with certainty that graviola can cure cancer.

In fact, a systematic review published in 2017 of many of the studies into Annona muricata (guanabana) pointed to the therapeutic potential of the plant. This includes developing ways to use guanabana extracts in disease management – including treating cancer.

The review concluded that: “A. muricata extracts seem to be some of the safest and promising therapeutic agents of the 21st century and beyond that need to be studied further for better medicinal formulations and diseases management.” (37)

Guanabana Tea

One of the best ways to get the benefits from the guanabana plant is to make yourself delicious healthy guanabana tea. This is also called soursop tea or graviola tea. For this, you can look online for pure graviola leaves or graviola tea bags.

You can also get the benefits of guanabana by drinking graviola juice or taking it in powder form.

Benefits of guanabana tea

There are some amazing health benefits of consuming guanabana tea. Many people regularly make their own graviola tea at home to help manage inflammatory conditions like arthritis or give their immunity a boost.

You may want to try drinking more guanabana tea to help deal with chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure or to use it as a heart tonic.

While some research studies point to the benefits of drinking guanabana tea to treat cancer, there is not enough research on humans to recommend this type of treatment.

How to make guanabana tea

There are a few different ways to make guanabana tea at home. Here is one guanabana tea recipe you might want to try:

  1. Put 2 or 3 dried guanabana leaves in a cup of boiling water.
  2. Leave to infuse for 10-20 minutes.
  3. Drink 2 or 3 times a day to benefit from guanabana leaf extract.

Alternatively, you can make a stronger soursop tea this way:

  1. Put 15 soursop leaves in a liter (one quart) of water and bring to the boil.
  2. Leave to simmer with the lid off until about half of the liquid has evaporated.
  3. Drink one cup of therapeutic soursop tea 3 times a day to give your health a boost.

Side Effects of Guanabana

As with any remedy – natural or pharmaceutical, you may experience some side effects from long-term use.

Some researchers are concerned that particular chemicals present in guanabana may cause nerve changes and movement disorders when taken in large amounts. The nerve changes may cause symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. It is also suggested that those individuals who have Parkinson’s disease avoid the graviola since it contains annonacin which can have an adverse affect on those suffering with this disease. (38)

Because guanabana can also help lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels, you should consult with your healthcare provider if you take medication for diabetes or hypertension.

Pregnant women should avoid consuming guanabana tea or guanabana extracts as no research has been carried out to see how it affects pregnancy.

Evidence suggests that it can have an adverse effect when taken with commonly prescribed anti-depressants as well.

It is unlikely that drinks or foods containing graviola could harm you when taken as part of a normal diet, but always talk to your doctor before taking any kind of supplement or alternative therapy.

Where to Buy Guanabana

Most people are not able to buy fresh guanabana fruits. To get the benefits from soursop or guanabana, you can buy various forms of supplements and extracts online. For example, you can purchase a variety of guanabana (graviola) products in Amazon here.

For example, graviola extracts can be purchased in convenient capsules. There is no recommended dose, but most manufacturers advise taking 500 mg soursop per day to enjoy the benefits of guanabana.

You can also buy graviola in powder form that can be added to hot water to make graviola tea. Powdered guanabana can also be added to smoothies or sprinkled on salads to help improve your health.

You can also buy guanabana extract as a tincture that you take with a glass of water.

Other online stores sell dried guanabana leaves, guanabana pulp, or you can buy soursop juice.

Maracuja Oil: What It Is, Benefits for Skin, Hair and How to …

22-04-2019 · Maracuja oil is the name given to oil extracted from the seeds of the passion fruit ( Passiflora edulis ). Research has shown that Passiflora edulis …

Maracuja oil is extracted from the seeds of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) and it has many benefits for your skin and hair. Maracuja oil is also called passion fruit oil, maracuya oil, Passiflora oil, or Passiflora edulis oil. It is said that maracuja oil is good for dry skin conditions, reducing inflammation, smoothing fine lines, and protecting your skin from sun damage.

Maracuja oil benefits your skin and hair because of its high content of the free fatty acids linoleic acid and linolenic acid. Although few studies have been done on maracuja oil, plenty of research show that these fatty acids promote good skin and scalp health. The benefits of maracuja oil also come from its antioxidants that help to enhance skin health.

In this article, you will learn about the many benefits of maracuja oil and how to use it on your skin and hair. You will also find out about any scientific research that highlights the benefits of maracuja oil.

What is Maracuja Oil (Passion Fruit Oil)?

Maracuja oil is the name given to oil extracted from the seeds of the passion fruit (Passiflora edulis).

Research has shown that Passiflora edulis seed oil contains two essential fatty acids that are good for your skin. The main benefits of passion fruit seed oil come from its two essential fatty acids: linoleic acid and linolenic acid. (1)

Other studies about the skin benefits of maracuja oil found that oil pressed from passion fruit seeds has an important use in cosmetics due to its antioxidant content. (2)

Passion fruits grow in warm climates and are prized for their healing benefits. Passion fruit is packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, and other healthy nutrients. One study found that consumption of passion fruit seed extracts is also good for your skin. (3)

However, in this article, we will focus on the benefits of applying passion fruit oil to your skin and hair.

What is Maracuja Oil Used for?

Maracuja oil is a good oil to help keep your skin in good health. The cold pressed oil is quite expensive and you only need to use a little on your skin to get its benefits.

One study found that Passiflora edulis oil is rich in antioxidants. These are free radical scavengers that help to prevent DNA damage in skin tissue. Studies have shown that topical antioxidants can help to protect the skin against photoaging. This is premature aging of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation. (4, 5)

You can also use maracuja oil to help keep your skin well moisturized. The seed oil extracted from passion fruit is touted to have excellent emollient properties that help lock in moisture in your skin.

Maracuja Oil Benefits and How to Use it

Let’s look in more detail at the many reasons to use maracuja oil as part of your regular skincare routine.

Maracuja Oil is Good for Dry Skin

Using maracuja oil on your skin is good to help keep your skin hydrated and well moisturized.

The reason why maracuja oil benefits dry skin conditions is because it contains high levels of linoleic acid and oleic acid. Studies have shown that applying moisturizers containing linoleic acid can help address issues of dry skin. (6, 7)

Some people are sensitive to maracuja oil and so it’s always a good idea to do a skin patch test first. If you have no reaction, then you can use maracuja oil to soothe and moisturize dry skin.

Tarte maracuja oil is one of the most popular brands of passion fruit oil. People claim that this oil is absorbed quickly into your skin and doesn’t feel greasy. Maracuja oil should be suitable for all skin types.

To use maracuja oil as a skin moisturizer, put a few drops on your palms and gently rub the oil into dry patches of skin.

If you need to moisturize a larger area of skin, you can mix passion fruit oil with a carrier oil of your choice. You could mix 4 drops of maracuja oil with a tablespoon of sweet almond oil, for example, and apply to dry skin to nourish and soothe it.

You could also put a few drops of hydrating maracuja oil in your favorite moisturizer to help improve your skin condition.

Maracuja Oil Could Treat Eczema, Psoriasis, and Skin Inflammation

Using maracuja oil may help your skin if you suffer from inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

There is some evidence to suggest that oils high in linoleic acid such as maracuja oil can be useful in treating atopic dermatitis (eczema). Linoleic acid helps to improve the skin barrier and reduce the severity of dermatitis. (7)

To help relieve itchy patches of dry flaky skin, you could use Passiflora edulis seed oil with other oils that have a proven effect in treating dermatitis. For example, the journal Dermatitis reported that coconut oil is an effective emollient to treat dermatitis. The antibacterial effect of coconut oil also helps prevent secondary skin infections. (8)

Mix a few drops of maracuja oil with a tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply the home remedy 3 times a day to soothe irritated skin caused by eczema or psoriasis.

You can also find out how to use essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, or frankincense oils to treat eczema naturally.

Maracuja Oil May Help Reduce Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Applying maracuja oil to your face can help to prevent some of the visible signs of aging.

There is some indirect evidence that oil pressed from passion fruit can help with fine lines. Studies have shown that maracuja oil is a good source of antioxidants that are necessary for skin health. (4)

Research has also found that passion fruit oil contains tocopherol which has vitamin E activity. (9) Some studies indicate that vitamin E is helpful in protecting the skin from damage and the effects of photoaging. (10)

To help smooth fine lines, apply a drop or two of maracuja oil to the area of skin under your eyes. Use 2-3 times a day regularly to help prevent the signs of aging. For the whole facial area simply put a few drops of the maracuja oil on your palms and gently rub into your facial skin.

Some people like to add some drops of maracuja oil to carrier oils that are good to use as a facial moisturizers, such as jojoba oil, rosehip oil or argan oil. Try to experiment with different blends to find your favorite mix.

You can also add to the mix a few drops of essential oils that are good to combat wrinkles naturally.

Did you know that there are foods that can help improve your skin condition and may prevent the early appearance of fine lines?

Maracuja Oil Helps Protect Skin from Sun Damage

Because maracuja oil contains antioxidants, it is a good oil to use to prevent DNA damage to skin cells caused by the sun.

It seems that some of the protection maracuja oil has for your skin comes from beta-carotene. Studies have shown that passion fruit oil has antioxidant activity because it contains carotenoids, polyphenols and tocopherols. These are antioxidants that have a positive effect on skin health. (6)

Research has found that beta-carotene is an essential element to protect the skin from the damaging effects of sunlight. One study found that applying topical treatments containing beta-carotene may have a protective effect on the skin against sun radiation. B-carotene helped to prevent free radicals causing damage to skin cells. (11)

The American Academy of Dermatology reports that wrinkles, loose skin, spider veins, or age spots are all signs of sun-damaged skin. (12)

Of course, it is important to regularly apply sunscreen with a high SPF to prevent skin damage caused by UVA or UVB radiation.

To help improve the health of your skin, apply a few drops of passion fruit oil directly to your face. Or, you could add 3 or 4 drops of maracuja oil to a tablespoon of jojoba oil or other carrier oil. Apply the maracuja remedy to your face, neck, and back of your hands in the morning and at night to help improve your skin condition.

If your skin gets burned in the sun, find out some of the best natural remedies to heal a sunburn fast.

Maracuja Oil for Acne

Maracuja oil is touted as a good oil for treating problems with oily skin such as acne breakouts and for clearing up pimples.

There is no research that backs up the anecdotal evidence for maracuja being a good anti-acne oil. Some people claim that regularly applying maracuja oil to acne-prone skin helps cut down sebum production and reduce breakouts. However, it seems that maracuja oil tends to cause acne breakouts in other people.

To use maracuja oil for acne, it is best to try it out on a small area first. This will help you see if this seed oil has any benefits to your skin in stopping acne.

If you think the oil will be good for preventing breakouts, then the best way to use maracuja oil for acne is to add a few drops of tea tree oil. Studies have shown that tea tree oil has an antibacterial effect and it reduces skin redness. One study found that tea tree oil was 3.5 times better than placebo in getting rid of pimples. (13)

Add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to a teaspoon of maracuja oil to use as an acne treatment. Apply sparingly to acne prone skin 2 times a day as this may reduce the number of pimples on your skin.

Learn more about the benefits of tea tree oil in reducing acne outbreaks. You may be interested to find out about other essential oils for acne to help clear up your skin problems.

Maracuja Oil for Your Scalp and Hair

It is claimed that using maracuja oil on your scalp can help to treat itchiness, flaky skin, and even boost hair growth.

Although many studies highlight its good antioxidant potential, there are no studies on how maracuja oil promotes good scalp health.

If you want to try using maracuja oil for your hair, put a few drops on your palms and massage the oil into your scalp. Leave the oil to penetrate your hair roots for 10 minutes then wash your hair as usual.

If you have dry hair with split ends, apply a few drops of maracuja oil to the ends of your hair after showering and towel drying your hair.

One way maracuja oil may be good for hair growth is to use it in other natural hair-boosting remedies. For example, castor oil, rosemary essential oil and peppermint oil have proven benefits in helping to stimulate hair growth. (14, 15, 16)

Make a maracuja oil hair mask by combining 1 tbsp. of castor oil, 1 tbsp. avocado oil, 3-4 drops rosemary or peppermint oil, and a few drops of maracuja oil. Massage the homemade hair mask into your scalp and leave for 2 hours before washing out. Repeat 2 times a week for best results.

Another way to use maracuja oil on your hair is to mix it with antifungal tea tree oil to help get rid of dandruff. Mix 4 drops of tea tree oil and a few drops of maracuja oil with a tablespoon of coconut oil. Massage the passion fruit oil remedy into your scalp, leave for 30 minutes, then rinse out with your favorite shampoo. Repeat 3 times a week to help get rid of dandruff naturally.

There are many more natural hair mask recipes that you can use to improve your hair condition and appearance.

Because there are few studies on the topical use of maracuja oil for improving skin health, there are no reported side effects.

As with using any kind of oil on your skin, including maracuja oil, it is always advisable to do a small skin test patch. Put a drop of maracuja oil on your skin and see if there are any adverse reactions within a day or two.

If you are using maracuja oil to try and address issues with your skin or hair, it is important to enjoy a healthy diet to nourish your skin and scalp from the inside. Find out about the best vitamins you need for healthy skin and hair.

Where to Buy Maracuja Oil

For most people, the easiest place to find maracuja oil is at online stores such as this one. To search for maracuja oil products, you can look for Tarte maracuja oil, Passiflora oil, passionfruit seed oil, or passion fruit oil.

Many health stores and natural food stores also stock good quality pure organic maracuja oil for skin and hair use.

How to Keep Snakes Away: Effective Snake Repellents

30-07-2017 · Researchers looked at cinnamon, cedarwood, sage, rosemary, juniper berry, and lavender essential oils as natural snake repellents. They found that 10 g of essential oil in 1 liter of water quickly repelled brown tree snakes when sprayed directly on them. 2. The researchers also tried another natural snake repellent with ginger oil and water.

Depending on where you live in the world, you may need to use effective snake repellents to keep snakes away from your home. Many people have tried all different kinds of repellents to get rid of snakes with mixed results. Some methods to repel snakes contain chemicals that can be harmful to humans and the environment, while some snake control methods using natural ingredients don’t always give 100% protection against snakes.

Of course, no one wants to be living with these crawling reptiles in their home. Even non-venomous snakes are never welcome in anyone’s home, not to mention finding a rattlesnake or viper in your garden.

This article examines various tried and tested methods to keep snakes away from your backyard or home. We will also look at what science says as to the effectiveness of natural snake repellents and if using chemicals to repel snakes is ever justified.

Are Natural Snake Repellents Effective?

Keeping snakes away from your home is a challenge because it’s difficult to find effective snake repellents. Many people have tried to make their own anti-snake concoctions to repel these slithering creatures. After all, there are effective natural repellents for ants and natural products like diatomaceous earth which is great for eliminating cockroaches. But do snake repellents from natural ingredients actually work?

Over the years, people have suggested different kinds of homemade remedies to repel snakes. These include fox urine, skunk scent, smoke, and mixtures containing ingredients like garlic, onions, and cayenne pepper. However, according to Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Resources Dr. Gary San Julian, none of these snake control methods have proved to be effective.1

Essential oils as a safe snake repellent

The journal Pest Management Science reported that some essential oils can be useful snake repellents against some species of common snakes. Researchers looked at cinnamon, cedarwood, sage, rosemary, juniper berry, and lavender essential oils as natural snake repellents. They found that 10 g of essential oil in 1 liter of water quickly repelled brown tree snakes when sprayed directly on them.2

The researchers also tried another natural snake repellent with ginger oil and water. This also resulted in the snakes slithering away when the repellent was sprayed on the brown tree snake.

However, Fish and Wildlife Conservation expert professor Jim Parkhurst reported that a mixture of essential oils as a safe natural snake repellent has not been proven to effectively eliminate snakes from large areas. The natural repellent is an effective repellent only when squirted directly on the snake. However, an essential oil snake repellent won’t keep snakes away from your backyard if you spray it on grass, leaves and flower beds.3

Professor Parkhurst says that the most effective way to keep snakes away from your home is to prevent them getting into the home in the first place. This means learning about snake behavior, eliminating things that attract snakes, and blocking point of access where the serpents can enter the home.

Natural commercial snake repellents

Some websites offer natural snake repellents that they claim can help to reduce the number of snakes or eliminate them completely from your home or backyard. These use a combination of organic material to force crawling reptiles away from treated areas.

However, there is no scientific evidence that these non-toxic snake repellents work against all species of snakes. Therefore, if you are interested in buying organic snake repellents, you should read online reviews of what users say about their effectiveness.

Plants that repel snakes

Some websites suggest various plants to repel snakes from your garden, as it is believed that a certain odor of these plants make snakes go away. However there is no scientific evidence to prove their efficacy.

The Effectiveness of Chemical Snake Repellents

Even when it comes to repelling snakes with chemicals, scientists and experts can’t agree on the effectiveness of these repellents for poisonous or non-venomous snakes. Some of the most popular ways to try and keep snakes away from homes are mothballs and products containing sulfur.

Do mothballs act as a snake repellent?

Mothballs are commonly recommended to prevent snakes getting into living areas. However, mothballs contain a toxic chemical called naphthalene that can harm humans and pets alike. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, naphthalene can cause you to have too few red blood cells causing anemia, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and yellowing of the skin.4

Professor Gary San Julian from the North Carolina State University says that mothballs are ineffective snake repellents that don’t prevent snakes from entering premises.1

Sulfur mixed with other compounds is also marketed as effective snake repellents. Usually, these repellents also contain naphthalene and cause a pungent smell. However, their effectiveness is limited. For example, Dr. Rex Marsh from the University of California discovered that chemical mixtures to repel snakes containing sulfur and naphthalene have not proved to be successful snake repellents.5

Ineffective Snake Repellents

There are a number of other kinds of snake repellents that either have no scientific evidence for their effectiveness or they are ineffective at preventing snakes coming into your home.

For example, Professor Gary San Julian (quoted earlier) said that a concoction of garlic, onion, and cayenne pepper was ineffective at eradicating reptiles from properties.1

You should also remember that snake deterrents using ultrasound are ineffective at repelling the crawling creatures. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University says that snakes have no hearing ability and don’t gather information through sounds.3

Even though granules containing sulfur and naphthalene have had some success, many people don’t want to use these treatments as snake repellents because they are toxic and can harm the environment.

How to Prevent Snakes Getting into Your Backyard and Home

Most experts agree that the best kind of natural repellent to keep snakes away from your home is not to attract them in the first place. Professor Gary San Julian says that, because most repellents are not effective at getting rid of snakes, the best way to eliminate them is to reduce their habitat.1

How to keep snakes away from the home

Snakes tend to enter homes and properties to look for food (i.e. mice or rats) or find shelter. Therefore effective methods to eliminate snakes from your home should prevent crawling reptile entering you home.

Researchers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University recommend 3 steps to help get rid of snakes from your home.3

  1. Eliminate all food sources. If you have a problem of snakes getting into your living area, make sure and keep your home free from rodents. Also, don’t leave opened food containers out and don’t leave pet food out overnight.
  2. Seal any openings where snakes can come in. Make sure and close off or seal up any large cracks or openings where snakes or rodents can get into your home. So, check places where cables enter the home or where you have ventilation vents. Either seal up large holes or place wire mesh over the opening. Also, close off any spaces under doors or around windows where mice, rats, other creepy crawlies, or snakes can get in.
  3. Remove bushes or plants from the home foundation. Snakes love to hide in bushes and undergrowth. You can help prevent these reptiles getting into your property by not encouraging them to live or nest directly beside your house.

How to keep snakes away from your backyard

To help protect your family and pets from snakes, you should also take measures to eradicate them from areas surrounding your home. The perfect habitat for snakes includes food, water and shelter. Therefore, the more you can disturb or eliminate their habitat from around your home, the less possibility there is that snakes will come into your home.

The Iowa State University recommends some ways to help keep snakes off your property.6

  1. Keep the lawn short. Don’t allow long grass to grow around or near your property. This is because snakes love to hide there and find shelter. Don’t allow vegetation or bushes to become overgrown.
  2. Keep landscaping simple. Try to reduce the number of spaces crevices in landscaping where snakes could shelter and hide. Remember that ponds can attract frogs which can be food sources for snakes. You could also try using pine cones, rock chips, or rose bush clippings around your garden to make these areas uncomfortable for snakes to slither across.
  3. Don’t stack wood. Stacked wood similarly provides shelter to snakes from aerial predators like hawks. The gaps between piles of wood are warm areas for snakes and can attract them to help control their body temperatures. If you need to stack wood on your property, researchers from the Pennsylvania State University recommend starting the stack at least 12 inches from the ground.7

What to Do if You Encounter a Snake in the Home

However, despite doing all you can to keep snakes away from your home and prevent them inhabiting your backyard, you may still encounter a snake in the home.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University says that if the snake is non-venomous, you can try coaxing it into a large box placed on the side. Or you could scoop up the snake with a large-bladed shovel or broom handle. However, if you are uncertain as to the species of snake and don’t know if it is poisonous or not, you should not try to catch it.

Effective Snake Traps

You can also use humane glue snake traps to capture snakes that are loose in your home. These work by sticking to the snake as it slithers over the glue trap and then rendering it immobile. The snake can then be carefully removed from the home and released from the trap by pouring some vegetable oil on it.

According to the University of Florida, glue board snake traps are placed along walls to trap snakes. However, most states ban the killing of snakes unless they could endanger you. Therefore, you should check the trap daily for snakes and not allow them to die in the traps.8

If it’s not possible to trap snakes, you can usually get them away from your home by opening external doors and closing the internal doors in your house to allow the snake to escape. If you are unsure if the snake is venomous or not, or you can’t locate the snake in your home, then you should call a professional to get rid of it.

Where I grew up, I used to have quite a lot of frogs and toads visiting my garden (and often my home). They were not poisonous frogs and never bothered me. I actually quite liked them and they were not a problem for me. But some people find frogs problematic if there are too many of them. They become too noisy, or some people just don’t like them. So in this article I am going to explain how to get rid of frogs and how to use frog repellents to keep frogs away.

A Word About Poisonous Frogs

Some frogs or toads can also be poisonous and their venom is highly toxic to pets. Dogs and cats are probably most likely to come into contact with a poisonous frogs, and that venom can cause serious problems.

So how can you get rid of frogs naturally without using chemicals that can harm your kids, pets or the environment?

Well, controlling the variables of frog habitat is crucial in getting rid of frogs, and there are other extra measurements like natural frog repellents that you can take to deter frogs from your property.

How to Get Rid of Frogs by Controlling Their Habitat

Did you know that the easiest way to keep frogs away from your garden is to take their food and shelter? Here are a number of ideas that will make your garden less attractive to frogs.

Drain standing water in your garden

Frogs are amphibian creatures, which means that they live on both dry land and in water. So if your garden has a water source that is stagnant, such as a pond or water for birds or other animals, you will need to remove these water sources from your garden. This will encourage most frogs to find another place to lay their eggs and seek shelter at night.

Removing stagnant water sources will also repel mosquitoes and other insects that are used as food sources for frogs, making your garden even less attractive.

If you have water features in your garden that you still want to keep, such as a pond, add a fountain to circulate the water so it will attract less mosquitoes and other insects and decrease food supply for the frogs. Or you can surround the pond with mesh netting which starts at ground level and is tall enough to prevent the frogs from leaping over it.

Mow the lawn and remove weeds and debris from your garden

Frogs like to hide in areas where there are tall grass, piles of leaves, shrubs, clutter, pet food or any other environment that can create a damp hiding place for them.

Removing all these will move the frogs away as they will feel more exposed, which is something they try to avoid. De-cluttering your garden will also reduce insects, keep the area dry so the frogs are more likely to find another place. Keeping the lawn short is also one of the best natural ways to repel snakes.

Keep your garden dark at night

Since outside lighting attracts insects, which are the primary food source of frogs, it is recommended to turn off outdoor lights, deck or porch light, as well as closing curtains in your home at night to reduce insect population which will in turn move away the frogs.

Natural Frog Repellents

What’s good about these frog repellents is that they are all natural, so they will not harm your family or pets. For best results, use the following natural frog repellents but remember to also create less attractive habitat for frogs as well.

Spreading salt

Spreading salt near the entrances of your home or around your pond deters frogs, as the salt creates an unpleasant feeling in their feet and skin. If you use this method, take care not to spread the salt near plants, as it will destroy them.

Using salt will make the soil unsuitable for future plant growth so this method is more suitable for areas where you don’t want to grow anything for the long term, for example in pavement areas or where you have weeds (salt is one of the top 10 natural weed killers for your garden).

Spreading coffee grounds

Similarly to salt, spreading coffee grounds will cause the frogs discomfort and will deter them from areas where they gather. You can also use the coffee grounds to get rid of ants.

Unlike salt, coffee is often used as a plant fertilizer as it contains nitrogen which is an important component for growing plants. However if you sprinkle coffee near plants, keep in mind that coffee is also acidic, and sprinkling too much of it can destroy plants that don’t like acidic soil.

Use vinegar or lemon juice

Vinegar has a lot of household uses and you can also use it to deter frogs.

Here is a recipe for a vinegar spray that can help you to deter frogs: simply mix equal amounts of vinegar (or lemon juice) and water and spray around areas where frogs tend to gather. The vinegar mixture will cause a burning sensation on the frogs’ feet, and will discourage them from returning to that area.

Don’t spray it onto plants as this acidic spray will most likely kill them.

How To Protect Your Pet From Poisonous Toads

The two most common toads found in the U.S. that are dangerous to pets are Colorado River Toad (also known as the Sonoran Desert Toad) and the Giant Toad (also known as the Marine Toad or Cane Toad).

Common signs that your pet has come in contact with a poisonous toad are foaming at the mouth, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, walking unsteadily, weakness or collapse, irritation to the eyes and nose and difficulty in breathing.

If you see your pet playing with a toad, or even if you suspect that it has been in contact with a toad venom, you should immediately flush your pet’s mouth with running water in an outward direction to prevent your pet from swallowing the venom and then contact your vet immediately.
